Great question! A trial lesson is meant to see if we are a good fit, so in a trial lesson, I will touch on a lot of different things to see if my teaching style is a good fit for your vocal goals!
In a normal first lesson, I will get started right away on your vocal journey. I'll spend some time giving the fundamentals and getting to know your voice. I'll give a run down of what lessons in the future are going to look like with me.
I teach students ages 11+. However if they are on the younger end of that, I will automatically change the lesson to a trial lesson to see if it is a good fit.
Studies have shown that children younger than 11 should really be in group music classes as it is better for their vocal health and cognitive development. This does not apply to other physical instruments like piano and violin because a piano is not affected by puberty and a person's health like the voice is.
If you book a normal lesson instead of a trial lesson, we will start by doing generalized vocal exercises so that I can get to know you/your child's voice. I'll give some science behind the voice and what our objectives are. At the end of the first lesson, I will give a 'homework' assignment to work on for the next week.
If you have a song that you have sung before and would like to sing it for me, I would love to hear it! But you do not need to come prepared with a song already learned.
Yes you can! I will be sad to see you go though!
Payments for any lessons that haven't yet been fulfilled will be due upon cancellation. A $5 fee will be accrued for every day that payment has not been made.
When it comes to learning any instrument, consistency is key, so I would STRONGLY recommend 1 lesson a week every week.
This way you can have a week to work on what we have worked on, but then I can very quickly help you through any blocks you might have had without getting too discouraged or developing too many bad habits.
It is always smart to just start off with a 30 minute lesson. After our first lesson, I can determine if it is wise to have a longer lesson.
Lessons that are 45-60 minutes are better suited to more advanced vocalists who have had lessons before and their voices can for sure handle that level of intensity.
